When it comes to maintaining an aquarium, one size does not fit all. There are many different types of aquariums: coral reef, saltwater fish-only, freshwater planted, African cichlid, discus, and many others…and all have different care requirements.
We have two primary goals: healthy animals and environments, and satisfied clients. To that end, we work with our clients to establish a maintenance schedule that ensures those goals are met. Some systems require only monthly maintenance care, while others benefit from much more frequent attention.
Maintenance schedules are determined by a number of factors, including the type of aquarium, size of the aquarium, the number of animals in the aquarium, and the needs of the client. During our initial consultations and planning, we will establish the appropriate maintenance schedule as well as what the average expected costs will be.
Where you put your tank is the number one consideration. You obviously want people to enjoy the aquarium so placement is key. Two-sided tanks allow viewing from multiple rooms but pose equipment concealment challenges. One-sided aquariums installed in a wall with access from behind makes maintenance and servicing the equipment easier.
An ideal location would be in a temperature controlled room without windows. Sufficient power is crucial and a water line is a plus.
The two most popular aquarium materials are glass and acrylic. Choosing which one is based on a few factors. For smaller aquariums glass is the preferred material due to it’s lower cost and scratch resistance. However for larger aquariums acrylic is preferred because the cost difference is negligible and scratches can be buffed out.
Custom aquariums are most always acrylic because acrylic can be formed into unusual shapes and sizes.
There are many advantages and disadvantages that come with both fresh and saltwater aquariums. While freshwater aquariums offer increased chances of breeding, the incorporation of live plants, and easier care and maintenance, saltwater aquariums can provide a larger variation regarding the species and colors of both fish and corals.
