Meet Our Team

Gregg Barcelow

Gregg has been working professionally with natural aquariums, specializing in coral reef systems, for over 30 years. While studying zoology with a concentration in zoo and aquarium science at Michigan State University, he began working with the design, installation, and husbandry of marine aquariums at a nearby aquarium store. Studying and working with natural marine ecosystems served to spark not only Gregg’s passion for the science of the ocean world, but also the drive to understand its processes and the creativity to replicate it for our clients.

Gregg serves Aquarium Design Professionals as staff scientist, chief aquarium designer, consultant, quality control manager, and education curator. Whether during the initial design phase or well after project completion, Gregg works diligently with our clients to ensure that their vision is delivered and maintained. In addition to natural aquariums, Gregg’s other passion is science education. Gregg holds a Professional Educator License in the state of Illinois, and currently teaches Biology and Ecology for Chicago Public Schools.

Mark Gray

From the time he was a child, when his father began keeping exotic fish, Mark has been surrounded by aquariums. For more than 40 years, he has worked with aquatic systems, ranging from delicate planted discus systems to saltwater aquariums several thousand gallons in volume. An avid SCUBA diver, Mark has spent time exploring the coral reefs of Cozumel, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic. This passion for the underwater world has driven him to master the creation of a wide variety of aquatic systems for demanding clients.

Mark serves Aquarium Design professionals as operations manager, project manager, life support system designer construction and plumbing specialist, and consultant. Being a licensed plumber, Mark has the technical ability to get water from one place to another and back, regardless of the scale and complexity of the project. Over the last several years, Mark has been involved with the design and construction of the Sea Dragon Display at Shedd Aquarium, the design of the life support system for the Moon Jelly Display and Hatchery at Brookfield Zoo, and was part of the team that captured sharks and other marine fish for the Georgia Aquarium. Under Mark’s guidance, projects are delivered on time and to specification.

Marco Gray
